Starbooks Classroom Transformation

Happy Friday!

Today our Kindergarten class had a classroom transformation! My students have been working all year long to earn 30 patriot bucks (our school-wide reward system for good behavior) and they finally earned 30 this week to earn a party! I decided to do my very first ever classroom transformation…and it was SO much fun!

Welcome to our Starbooks Cafe! We like to read a latte!

I found this ADORABLE idea from a fellow Kindergarten teacher who blogs, K Teacher Tiff. Tiffany shared her Starbooks transformation on Facebook a couple of months ago and I instantly fell in love with it. The starbucks and coffee lover in me died at the cuteness. I decided when my students earned their patriot bucks I would do a transformation, and with the holidays, it came at a perfect time for a cute and cozy day of learning!

Although it was much more work than simply letting them have a pajama day or extra recess, it was well worth it! All of our work activities and stations throughout the day were coffee themed, and the kids LOVED it. I loved watching their little brains work as they did each activity and to see how excited they were to learn.

Even Snuggles had some cocoa :) Even Snuggles had some cocoa 🙂

We started the day with stations. I bought Tiffany’s Read a Latte pack on Teachers Pay Teachers…and it was worth every penny!

We had 8 stations activities:

matching initial sounds,

uppercase and lowercase matching

designing your own Starbucks cup

read to a partner

write the room for coffee cup sight words

listen to reading on technology (because people in Starbucks are always on their laptops of course!)

coffee grounds sight words

making an order form and counting out money to purchase treats

and finally… buying lattes and treats!

I LOVED the idea of the kiddos deciding on their own order and then counting out the fake money and buying it themselves. We have been reviewing coins so this was a great way to apply that knowledge and practice! They did such a great job with it too. They were able to choose 2 treats from muffins, cookies or rice krispie treats and then got one hot or iced latte of their choice… aka chocolate milk over ice or heated up in the crock pot! 🙂

After lunch, the kiddos came back and we read the book “How to Catch an Elf” and then did a book review on it. Of course they all loved it and gave it 5 smiley faces! For early finishers I had another activity to write about their favorite drink and draw a picture of it. Hot chocolate for the win, who knew!

After specials, they came back and we did “whip cream” aka shaving cream sight words on the tables. I still remember being in first grade and the best day of the year was the day we got to write words in shaving cream! This was my first time doing it as a teacher, and once again they loved it. We are nearing the end of the 3rd six weeks so sight word assessments are coming up, and this was a great review for them to get in that extra practice!

Note to self: take it easy on the shaving cream next time! There was SO much and it was everywherrrree!!!

At the end of the day, each kiddo got to take home their grab bag of a couple extra treats. Then they were on their way!

It was a great day in Kindergarten… one I will remember for a very long time and hope they do too!

Merry Christmas friends… if you need to be put in the holiday spirit, go visit a kindergarten class before December 20th, it’s sure to do the trick!

xx,

Madison
